I’m in the process of moving some of my websites to a new hosting company. This can be a scary process for critical sites. Will there be a smooth transition? Will your code work on the new server? Stuff like that.

I’ve already made a discovery. Some hosting companies will not let you move a site until you have their nameserver associated with your domain. At first, I was having problems with the sites disappearing until the new nameservers were propagated throughout the internet. Then I discovered a solution.

Add the new nameserver as the third or fourth nameserver for your domain. Your site will continue to be presented by your old server. And you will be able to set up your new hosting when the additional nameserver has been propagated.

Once the new hosting has been set up, you are ready to change nameservers one and two. Then as they are propagated, your site will begin to show up at the new server.

It seems easy now. But I thought those of you who may be moving your sites would like to know.
